There are worse things, though, than being “saddled” with a Gutenberg Bible whose discovery becomes front-page news in the New York Times. The find is hailed as the “Forty-Sixth” Gutenberg, and its unexpected reappearance creates a worldwide sensation, capturing the imagination of book hunters everywhere. Collectors search their garrets and basements in the hopes of finding a treasured first edition, hoping they too can make a small fortune.

Scribner decides to pay £40,000 to buy the book for stock, and then sells it to bookseller H. P. Kraus, who will send the two volumes to the Gutenberg Museum in 1978. It costs the institution $1.8 million to bring the Bible home to Mainz.16
